Free support or sponsor support
This campaign is designed to bring people into Kai Grow. Homegrown households can keep receiving seasonal seedlings and reminders, while supporters can buy through SKGF instead of a big-box store and fund another family's pack.
Strawberries are left out this year because seed-grown plants will not be reliable by Labour weekend. They can be planned now for next spring.
Retail benchmark: common NZ garden-centre punnets are often around $3-$4 each, with specials such as three punnets for about $12. SKGF pricing should stay simple and competitive while funding Homegrown packs.
Planting timing
Tomatoes should start as soon as approval is likely, ideally mid-late August under cover.
Cucumbers and courgettes grow fast, so mid-late September sowing is enough for late October pickup.
Lettuce gives quick salad value while summer crops establish.
Basil and marigolds pair naturally with tomatoes and can be raised from seed in the greenhouse.
Capsicum, chilli, and celery are not promised in the main packs because they need earlier starts and steadier heat.
